The diffuser of the My Chrysalis table lamp is formed by a random configuration of silk cocoons each of which is attached to a hand soldered wire matrix. The process starts by attaching the silk cocoons to a strand of wire. The first strands are then attached to a hand brushed stainless steel frame. The layers of silk cocoons slowly build up creating the overall form of the piece.

DesignerAngus Hutcheson
Graduating with Honors at the Architectural Association in London (1981), designer Angus Hutcheson worked with Will Alsop to hone his skills in the trade. After subsequently opening his own architecture firm, Hutcheson felt he needed to expand the organic modern ideas stirring about his sketchpad and relocated to Bangkok, Thailand in 2002. There his immediate surroundings, rich with natural materials, created an instant impact allowing his lighting & furniture designs to flourish. ANGO was launched in 2003 as an allegory about how we can live alongside nature in a technological world. A central point of reference in the early stages of Hutcheson’s designs is the numerous patterns in nature around us. ANGO designs idealize a sort of personal ecology, where the users are living with designs they can form a bond with. They are also about ecology in the known sense of manufacturing things using renewable or easily recyclable materials, in a way that is environmentally responsible. For instance, the diffusers in ANGO lighting are fabricated by hand using natural, highly renewable materials including silk cocoons, hand cast polymer, tree bark, raw silk and timber. They also require minimal energy to process. The manufactured parts of the light comprising the base and electrical components are made of stainless steel & concrete. In 2004 Hutcheson received two 1st places in lighting from the Elle Décor Awards Thailand. He has also created an exclusive lamp design to support the efforts of Princess Pa, the Queen of Thailand’s personal charity. Returning to his architectural roots, Hutcheson is currently building an eco-sensitive public space near a temple & mediation center in Chiang Mai as a way to give back to his community.
